A full mouth contains 28 main teeth and up to 4 third molars. Sometimes, however, teeth can be lost.

Loss of teeth

How it works:

Tooth loss can be a symptom of many illnesses in your gums, jawbones and teeth – including cavities, periodontitis and broken teeth.

Total loss occurs when all the teeth are missing. Partial loss occurs when only some have gone.

Risk factors:

The severity and frequency with which cavities, periodontitis and dental trauma are found are major factors in the occurrence of tooth loss.

Prevention:

Prevention is the best treatment as far as it’s possible: using correct brushing techniques and keeping the spaces between your teeth clean to avoid diseases in your gums, jawbones and teeth all help keep your mouth healthy and your teeth in place.

To prevent against dental trauma, wear a tooth guard if you take part in violent/dangerous sports.

What will your dentist/dental hygienist do?

Your dentist/dental hygienist has several options available for replacing lost teeth. These include fitting bridges, prosthetics and implants depending on how severe your loss is and where it occurs in your mouth.
