Five Crowns All At Once

Question

I’ve had the same dentist many years, and I’ve always been pleased with his service. Now, though, he’s saying that I need to have five crowns made all at once – costing more than $6000! He’s telling me that the teeth will break if they aren’t crowned, but I don’t believe him.

Can it be true that I need five crowns all at once?

I’ve also considered shopping around to find a better price. Do you have any recommendations?

Martin

Answer

Dear Martin,

I’m glad to hear that you’ve got a dentist you’re satisfied with, and you shouldn’t let this ruin that – even if the news of five crowns all at once is undoubtedly a surprise!

It’s important to remember that there are many different reasons for crowning a tooth. One of the more common is a fractured or cracked tooth. If you haven’t already noticed one of these, your dentist is probably recommending the crown to prevent them from happening.

With regards to shopping around, I recommend against it – you know what you’ve got, but you’ll never know what you’re going to get. If you haven’t been dissatisfied with the work your dentist has provided you with before, I strongly recommend staying with him.

Yours Sincerely,

Rune Skou, D.D.M.
