Toothache Without Cause?

Question from Sofie

I’ve been suffering from toothache for some time now, but my new dentist has examined my teeth several times without finding anything.

My former dentist did root canal on three without results, and now my new dentist is talking about extracting them.

I don’t know what to do, since my new dentist doesn’t even seem certain that the pain will go away if he pulls the teeth.

I’m pretty afraid of having my teeth pulled, but I’d really like the pain to go away.

What should I do?

Sofie

Answer

Dear Sofie,

You shouldn’t have your teeth pulled without a clear diagnosis!

The pains could be from nerval injury, erosion, unnatural wear, cavities or Periodontitis – among other possibilities.

If your dentist really can’t find the reason for your pain, it could be referred pain. For example, pain from the teeth in the upper jaw can be a sign of Maxillary Sinusitis, and pain from the teeth in the lower left jaw can be a sign of heart disease.

It’s important that you see you doctor to have these and other possible referred pains ruled out.

Yours Sincerely,

Rune Skou, D.D.M.
