Correct brushing technique

Keeping your teeth clean is the easiest way of keeping your teeth healthy.
What is it?
Correct brushing technique is any technique that cleans the teeth efficiently without causing damage.
Brushing should always be done in circular, rubbing motions, and the brush should never scratch the teeth as this will cause unnatural wear.
The brush’s bristles should be placed at a 45 degree angle to the length axis of the teeth, too, as this will help to prevent periodontitis, gingivitis and cavities.
It’s also important to ensure that all of your teeth are brushed every time you brush. Take a note of how long it takes to properly do this, and use this number as a measure so you don’t become sloppy in the future.
If you need advice on how to brush correctly, talk with your dentist/dental hygienist at your next examination. At this time, also note how you feel after a scaling, as this is how your teeth are supposed to feel after every brushing.
Why is it used?
If correct brushing techniques are used twice a day in conjunction with cleaning between the teeth, it’s possible to always keep your teeth and gingival tissues healthy.
Once learnt, correct brushing technique will become a habit which you’ll find it uncomfortable to go without.
What are the risks?
There are no risks associated with correct brushing technique.
