What is it?

A bite splint is usually made from acrylic material and covers all the teeth in one jaw.

Depending on its intended purpose, it may be either smoothed or raised.

Why is it used?

A bite splint is often used to relieve pressure on teeth and ceramic crowns, treat jaw muscle pain, stop snoring and prevent the heavy wear associated with tooth grinding etc.

They can also be used when heavy wear has already taken place to find a new natural resting place for the teeth before crowns and/or bridges are fitted.

What are the risks?

The risks associated with bite splints are very limited, but in some cases muscle pain may increase with their use. This returns to normal when the splint is removed.

What is the alternative?
