An extraction is performed when a tooth is unsalvageable.

What is it?
An extraction is the removal of a tooth using a pair of forceps and a small lever. No drill or scalpel is used at any point.
Why is it used?
If the patient doesn’t want an alternative treatment or if an alternative treatment isn’t viable, extraction must be used.
What is the risk?
An extraction can occasionally damage surrounding tissues.
What are the alternatives?
- Operative extraction
- No treatment [often used for children when their primary teeth are affected]
