An operative extraction is an extraction which uses additional tools.

What is it?
An operative extraction is the removal of a tooth or tooth fragments using a drill and/or a scalpel.
Why is it used?
If the patient doesn’t want an alternative treatment or if an alternative treatment isn’t viable, extraction must be used. This becomes an operative extraction when a conventional extraction isn’t possible.
What is the risk?
An operative extraction can occasionally damage surrounding tissues.
